The hymn below was written in the 1800’s. It has ancient Irish heritage and was translated and given verse and music by Mary E. Byrne and Eleanor H. Hull. It speaks of God’s influence in our lives. It almost suggests God as a goal so we may seek truth and wisdom over riches and perhaps we will recognize God’s ways are the best ways. The message is clear: Teach us Lord, to love you, learn from you and let you always be our guide. The lyrics are shared below. Thanks for letting me borrow words from someone else today. They are beautiful!
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.
AMEN!
One of my favorite hymns. Thanks for sharing the words. I sang along in my head as I read them!
So pleased you “heard” the hymn as you read it. I heard it as I wrote it. Thanks for sharing!
