A Christmas Favorite

21 Dec

Do you have a favorite Christmas carol or two or ten?

I love so many of them and was blessed to first learn them in music class in my public elementary school about 100 years ago. Those were special memories and special songs. Those carols were then revisited and reinforced in church year after year and I felt blessed by them then and feel blessed by them now.

I went to a choral concert recently that featured Christmas music that was mostly sacred not secular. It was special and the audience at the end was invited to sing along with familiarity and love in our participation.

A favorite of mine is listed below. As you read the lyrics can you hear the tune? It is a very special Christmas hymn with a very special message.

In the Bleak Midwinter

Gustav Holst, Christina Rossetti

“In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen
Snow on snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter
Long, long ago
Angels and Arc Angels
May have traveled there
Cherubim and Seraphim
Thronged the air
But only his Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshiped the beloved
With a kiss
What can I give him?
Poor as I am
If I were a shepherd
I would give a lamb
If I were a wise man
I would do my part
But what I can I give him
Give him my heart
Give him my heart.”

The message? Give what you can at Christmas.
