When is enough really enough?
This was the message at church on a recent Sunday from our pastor who had many examples of how to measure “enough.” She spoke of food, of money, of earning a living and providing for family and determining when it is all truly enough.
We spend time seeking and getting , counting and collecting all the while, in reality what we have is truly enough. Most of us have enough food on our table. We have more than enough clothes to wear, shoes to put on, hobbies to engage in, books to read and television shows to watch, not to mention money to spend. Why do we often want more? We accrue to make ourselves happy. Then when happiness seems elusive, we still want more.
The Bible does not speak of HAVING enough, but rather it speaks of BEING enough.
There is a firm definition between the two and if I had to pick one, which would I choose…having enough or being enough?
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2:9
“But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you…” – Exodus 3:11-12a
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
Wow! All of what God accomplished was for ME?
God’s words are true and they teach me about myself. They teach me to accept who I am and what I have.
They remind me that God’s love is MORE than anything I might be or have or become.
If I AM enough then I HAVE enough.
Amen!
