So many times we think of being a servant as a negative thing. I am someone’s servant? Hmmm…. if I am someone’s servant, what do they expect from me? On the other hand, we love the notion of serving God and serving others. Which is it? A good thing or not so much?
God would have us believe servanthood is a good thing. Servanthood is NOT slavery. Slavery requires total obedience despite desire. Servanthood is freedom to work for a chosen cause / master. I serve my Lord and I am not a slave to my Lord. It is my desire to serve God and others.
Pastor Rick Warren in his best seller from the early 2000’s THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE speaks of servanthood by quoting 1 Corinthians 12:6
” And there are different ways that God works through people but the same God works in all of us in everything we do.”
That suggests that our servanthood is God-led and God-inspired.
“We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” Ephesians 2:10
Warren goes on to explore this by saying that we were deliberately shaped by God for service. Each of us has a ministry designed for us to cultivate and use by reaching out to others and by honoring God with our gestures of service. We were carefully designed for servanthood. And indeed we can lead others in this manner. I like the quote below, but will add this….
Keep God at the center of your servanthood.
