In His Hands

4 Aug

There was a memorial service at our church last weekend for a dear woman and her mother. Kerri was a woman whom we would describe as having “special needs.” She passed in her sleep unexpectedly in recent time. Her mother, Shirley, passed away months ago at the height of Covid when funeral gatherings were either virtual or not at all. The two sisters left behind celebrated the lives of their dear sister and remarkable mother at the service. While Kerri was 61 and truly adult in her years, she was childlike in her thinking and in her education and navigation through life. Her mother was a woman of great spirit, love and patience–qualities worth admiring. The surviving sisters described their beloved sister and mother as a “package deal.” This was especially true since their dear father passed a few years ago. Kerri and Shirley were together A LOT. They learned from each other and brought wisdom to those of us who knew them.

One of Kerri’s favorite songs was “He’s Got the Whole World in his Hand.” It was one of the few songs in her world that she knew word for word and verse by verse. We sang it together at the service.

God had Kerri in his hand since birth. He knew of her developmental difficulties and he knew of her charm and love of living. She was placed here to touch us and teach us about life.

–play card games even if counting to 52 is impossible

–say hi to everyone–be inclusive and suspend judgment

–hug deeply–touch and human connection matter

–ask questions–they are for learning and they satisfy curiosity

–believe the words to this song with all your heart:

HE’S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS (4 TIMES)

HE’S GOT YOU AND ME, NEIGHBOR, IN HIS HANDS (4 TIMES)

HE’S GOT EVERYBODY HERE IN HIS HANDS (4 TIMES)

HE’S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS (4 TIMES)

While many of us know additional lyrics to this song, those above are the ones Kerri knew and loved. Kerri’s wisdom in life came from living and loving despite her ever present academic challenges. She was a teacher to all who knew her, as was her mom. Their worlds fit perfectly in God’s hands.
