God’s Green Goodness

2 Aug

Wow! I am at my desk this morning looking through a window overlooking my back yard. It is amazingly green all over the place! Living in western NY for many years I have learned that by this time of the season things outdoors are often pretty dry. The lawn gets pale and almost crunchy and my outdoor potted plants get demanding for more and more water. This year, though, July was quite rainy. And while rainy days are not my favorites, they certainly have preserved the beauty of this summer.

I think God’s cycle of nature is amazing. Because I live in an area of four defined seasons, one glance will expose the seasonal majesty at hand. At the moment I am looking at thick grass sprinkled with morning dew. The evergreens are bold and tall and almost fluffy and the sky is perfectly blue. However, I am well aware of the cooler nights coming and that the bountifully green trees will soon be changing over.

Speaking of green–how about the summer harvest? The tomatoes and corn on the cob have been amazing. We had corn and tomatoes three times last week—such simple and delicious side dishes! A drive through the country reveals the orchards are happily ripening apples and the cattle are grazing with joy in the lush fields.

Thank you, God, for giving us all of this, but even more, I thank you for bringing to me the gift of observation so that your glorious summer season, ever so short in my neck of the woods, has not slipped past my eyes and gone unnoticed. Your work is majestic and beautiful and I give you thanks.

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

Psalm 103:1Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”
