I drove by a church today with a message sign near the street. The sign read: “Lord give me the persistence of a weed.”
I am not much of a gardener. My favorite kind of gardening is a few potted plants I have on the back patio. But I am well acquainted with weeds and their persistence. We all know the feeling of hours of weed pulling on a Saturday and by Monday it looks like the work went undone. Perhaps the happy gardener is the one who does a little something each day so that the garden work does not run too far ahead. In the meantime, though, there is that quote I saw on the church sign.
Am I as persistent as a weed? Do I hold up in tough times? Can I pass muster when the situation warrants it?
Personally, I run hot and cold. I feel patient and persistent on some things, but I fail to be dedicated at other things. My true persistence should be for God’s work.
Shall I be persistent when it benefits others?
Shall I be persistent not for my own needs and satisfaction , but rather for the needs and satisfaction of others?
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it. Psalm 37:5
Commit your works to the Lord
And your plans will be established. Proverbs 16:3
Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. Galatians 6:9
When I think of other words that remind me of persistent, I think of committed, dedicated, motivated, moved.
May my Godly efforts always behave like a weed!
