A cool word is on my mind today! And again I turned to an online dictionary for clarification of this amazing word. The definition I have for you today is a compilation of several sources:
SOVEREIGN: a monarch; a king, queen, or other supreme ruler; one who has supreme power or authority.
To explore the word further we find that it has French derivation and the first four letters of the word mean upper, ultra or super and then reign is a word we, of course, all know. Putting the two parts together gives us the perfect word to describe God–ultra in authority; super in power.
And thank goodness God reigns over all in the chaotic and divided world we find ourselves in. We cannot rely on civic leaders, nor can we seek wisdom from government officials and the answers are not with educators nor with elected officials. God. Reigns. Period. And when I think in terms of a spiraling society that looks awfully out of control, I am grateful for a God who is in charge–sovereign.
Browsing a website called CROSSWAY I saw this depiction:
When life feels out of control, it can be comforting to remember that we’re never out of the sight of our Creator—and he never loses control. Be encouraged about God’s sovereignty and rest knowing he rules over all.
The website went on to cite some definitive scripture to further define God’s sovereign ways.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
This gives the words, “Thank God” new meaning…right?
THANK GOD!
