Taking Chances

31 Mar

I probably should not have been out and about today. It was miserable outside. We woke to a morning temperature of 60 degrees and rapidly the temperature slipped to 40 degrees. The thermometer on my car actually said 39. It was almost 70 a few days ago so today felt just plain wrong. To add more misery there was sideways rain accompanying 50 MPH wind gusts. But I decided the few grocery items I wanted could not wait, so I took the chance of getting chilled and damp. Both happened! I am home now enjoying the warmth of the house.

While I was out I had the car radio on and for a period of time I was listening to the Family Life Network. Among the gospel themed and spiritually based music they were broadcasting I heard this statement from one of the program moderators:

“We sometimes worry about the past and we often worry about the future and what we need to do instead is cherish the present because God is there and that is where he can make all things new.

How many times have we bemoaned the yesterdays when in fact, those days are gone like water under a bridge and we are long overdue to learn and then let it go. And of course we fear the future at times because facing the unknown is stressful, full of doubt and a heavy weight to bear. On the other hand, haven’t you ever spent long hours worrying about the “mights” rather than being open to God’s might? Moreover, sometimes the “mights” never even emerged.

Matthew 6:25-34

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”

That is quite the reminder of how we should stop leaning on our own understanding , but instead we could lean on the Lord.

Time to take that chance!
