My Leather Jacket

15 Mar

Greetings! Today is beautifully sunny in the Buffalo area, but downright cold. It is still in the thirties. Yesterday on my way to church I decided to NOT wear a winter coat and instead I chose a vintage leather jacket to wear. (I probably should have added a scarf and gloves.) I call the jacket vintage because I suppose it might be 20 years old, rubbed worn around the button placket and at the cuffs and shaped like a blazer. It shows its age, but I still love it!

Hmm—makes me think of myself. I am rather *vintage* and sometimes I appear ragged around the edges and a little worn and outdated, but that is precisely who I am. God has made me this way. It’s not bad and it’s not good, it just is and I believe God relishes when I am accepting of who I am and the gifts he has given me.

I once read an article that talked about how awful it would be if after working really hard at selecting or crafting a special gift for someone, they barely acknowledged it. Gift giving can indeed be tricky, and just when we think we have found the perfect gift, perhaps we sometimes have missed the mark.

God has not missed the mark! He made us just the way he saw fit and no doubt was and is pleased with his creation. To honor God, we should be appreciative of the gifts he has given us and we should be faithful to the woman he made us to be.

I wish I wish, I wish….I could lose 10 lbs, I could sing, I could make more money, I could run a marathon, I could have blue eyes, I could (fill in the blank.) Those wishes are messages back to God that we are unsatisfied with his gift. Oops! That is not what I meant. Lord. That is not what any of us means when we want to have God’s gifts be *just a little different*.

Back to my leather jacket. I love it for it’s worn grainy fabric, its rough edges and its older style. It’s time to say, “Yes, that’s me! And I love being me because I am one of God’s gifts.

Jeremiah 1:5 NIV

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…” Amen.

Denise, Thank you for this lovely adventure. I visited the blog for the first time today. I will be with you every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On last Friday’s blog, you invited us to post any little saying that means something to us. I keep one taped to my computer and look at it every day. It is my answer to people who ask “why am I here? I don’t do anything to contribute to the world ,” It’s a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“To laugh often and much… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have suceeded”
